Samantha Siffring helps moms build profitable online businesses while raising kids. She does this through her Mama to CEO program and simple scaling mastermind. I first heard about Samantha on Monica Louie's Flourish to 7 Figures Podcast and how Samantha went from $40 to a million dollars in one year. Hearing about her journey about how she did this as a mom of three young children intrigued and inspired me. So I had to invite her to my show. One of the things I've been learning and discovering is how often we let our own stories and beliefs limit us. I thought, who am I? Why would someone as successful as Samantha one to talk to a, nobody like me, but as I've been proven wrong time and time again, by the amazing and generous guests I've had on my part, because Samantha quickly said yes to my invitation to be interviewed.

And now I know why. You'll hear how Samantha shares how relationships are at the center of what she does. This seems to be a central theme among those successful women's stories, but I'll let Samantha tell it in her own words. So let's get to the interview.

Sharon: (02:20)
Hi Samantha! Thank you so much for joining me today on the financially free woman podcast. I really do appreciate you taking out the time to do this today. And for our listeners who may not know how Samantha and I connected, I'm all the way here in Singapore and you're all the way there, the United States. And it really was a few things before I get to know about you. It was through Monica Louie. Obviously you were, you were on her podcast and I really liked hearing the interview and your whole journey from $40 to a million with two kids.

So I, myself, as a working mom, trying to figure out this whole thing about financial freedom, obviously I thought I'm going to try and get Samantha on the show, after I saw her through Monica who I heard about through Pat Flynn. So I thought it would be good for you to maybe introduce to our listeners who may not on this part of the world may not even have heard of you or know what you're doing, or we're here in Asia. So it's, um, and it's a fairly new podcast to be honest. So I'm just starting to talk about this whole idea of working moms, trying to figure out a way to be financially free. So it'd be great to hear your story, what you do now, how did you end up doing what you're doing now?

Samantha: (03:29)
Yeah. Okay. So like you said, yes, I made $40 in my first year. And then in the past 12 months in my business, I've made a million dollars, which is so exciting and how I have done that. I'm a business coach. I help moms, other moms like me build an online business. So essentially take whatever passion or skills or knowledge they have and monetize it into something that they can offer online. That was very much my own journey. I had a master's degree in counseling and I had studied marketing in school. I had helped a lot of people in their businesses in my career prior. And then I ended up as a stay-at-home mom and had no idea what to do with that. I applied for jobs childcare here is so expensive. I couldn't figure out how to find a job that would pay enough to cover more than just childcare. And so I got into online business and I worked for another life coach for a while coaching and her company, and tried a bunch of other different things online before I really landed on deciding to build my own coaching business. And it took a few years, I think, to, to figure out even that coaching was a thing. And then to start building the coaching business up to where it is right now.

Sharon: (04:58)
Yeah. So that's the, that's the interesting thing, because I think we, we sometimes get distracted by the $40 to a million in a year, but I heard you said that it's, you've tried different things and it's taken you a few years. So this is the part that I really, if we could just go a little bit more into detail with, because I think it's good for people to know, because I, myself, I've been, I say I started a podcast last November, but I really have started this journey of discovery and trying to figure what it is that I really want to do. When I, one day I always tell the story. One day I was walking up the stairs to my office and I was in a good paying job, six figure income, but I just got to a point where I thought, Oh my God, I'm in my forties.

Sharon: (05:42)
Is this going to be it? Am I going to be walking up these stairs for the rest of my life, just to pay off the bills and then occasionally travel and then die. So that would really hit me. I had this sense of emptiness. And despite thinking that this what I wanted, this was the salary goal I had, I hit it. This was the job title I wanted and I got it. And then I was happy for a while for maybe a month or two. And then this really hit me and ironically, or I don't know if it's ironic or it's just the way the world, the universe has a way of working. And I got let go from the job. And I just, sometimes when I think back, I just maybe wonder if that was really because I knew deep in my heart, that was, I was not happy there.

Sharon: (06:23)
And that was not the place I was meant to be. And since then, till now, it's taken quite a few years of trial and error. Exactly what you said. And I like to talk a little bit more about this part of your journey, which a lot of times we don't hear so much about, we hear the whole glamorous part about the five, 10 year overnight success as we always hear, but we don't hear about the part that leads up to that moment. So what was that light in terms of, you said you tried different things, was it because you felt like, I mean, how do you know when to kind of say, this is okay, maybe this is not it and I need to maybe do something else or fine tune. How do you tell?

Samantha: (07:01)
Yeah. Okay. Now I need to like think back. I think what I first did when I was first discovering online business, I think it was maybe 2010 and I was just starting to like, hear about different opportunities online. I started blogging. I knew that people made a lot of money blogging. My blog never made any money, but that was like the first thing that I tried, then I found this company where they hired moms to sell products, like marketing products to small businesses. So then I did that for a while. That company was a startup and it went under, it ran out of funding. And so we were on vacation and I got a call being like the company's closed now, like overnight it was gone. Um, so that was an opportunity that I tried. Then I started an Etsy shop. So I like sewed all of these different like bags and like zipper pouches and hair ties and all of that stuff.

Samantha: (08:09)
I think I spent more on materials than I actually thought back what I was paid from what I was selling. And I hated sewing. Like I was like crying and cursing at this machine every time. So that one, it was like, maybe this is just not for me. And around that time, I had a friend who was getting involved in network marketing. She was with this company that sold like nutritional supplements and she had lost a bunch of weight with it. And then she started making money. Like she started getting like $200 checks in the mail. And I was like, what is that? I definitely want to be involved in whatever that is. Cause that sounds amazing. So I then did that for several years. I mean, maybe like three years, I was involved with that company and became a leader in that company. And I was actually at a leadership training for that company.

Samantha: (09:08)
And there was like a Sales Vice President on stage and they were being like a motivational speaker essentially. And I realized I want to be that person. Like, I want to be the person on this stage teaching. I don't want to be the one here sitting in the seat, like implementing this stuff. I want to be that inspirational teacher. And so on the way home from that training, I was like, I'm done with this company I'm done with this role. I'm out. I'm going to figure out what to do next. And that around that same time as when I met that other life coach, she was a therapist. Who'd become a life coach, started a life coaching company. So I started working for her and I was making like $40 an hour working for her coaching clients. And it was a slow build of clientele with her company. And I did that for, I think two years before I decided to launch my own business, which I did in 2017. So that was like 17 years of making maybe $12,000 a year. And like at the very best before I even started my own business.

Sharon: (10:29)
So I'm really curious because this is the thing 12 years. Did you ever at any point wonder and or have any self-doubt or how do you keep yourself going? Because there must've been something that was pulling you or kind of telling you, Oh, maybe not this, maybe that and keep going, or maybe just one, maybe you just forget about the whole thing. I mean, what kind of kept you going to keep exploring right? And sometimes I think people give up very quickly. Like for me, I can really relate with what you're saying, because I knew from very early on, I wanted to be my own boss. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to run my own business right out of college. I started a kid's party planning business, and then I kind of dabbled in various network marketing MLM type things. And the kind of the final one was when my husband and I decided to go really all in.

Sharon: (11:22)
And then we started up a cafe and ran it for four years. Unfortunately we were in the red. I mean, I'm very open about this and that's really what launched today's podcast because we're now in a six figure business debt because of that, to keep it going. And I kind of really hit financial rock bottom and I was trying to crawl my way out and that's really how all the blogging started and trying to find answers. And at one point I, I distinctly remember a voice in my head that said, Hey, you know what, maybe you're just not cut out for this. You've been doing this for 10 years and you're not making really like serious money. So maybe you should just go back to just be your nine to five employee and just work to pay the bills. And I did take a hiatus for a while.

Sharon: (12:05)
I kind of put my dreams and everything on hold because I believed that story, I believed that probably because then I started reading and then I came across, you know how, when you tell yourself a story and that's playing in your head all day long, and then after a while you go out and look for evidence to validate that story. So I was reading stuff and I was reading about, okay, and how do you know if you're cut out to be an entrepreneur or maybe you're cut out to be just an employee. And then I will pick up on, yeah. Some people are just not cut out to be entrepreneurial. Some people are just not cut out to be entrepreneurs. I think I'm not cut out to be an entrepreneur because if I was, I would not be making, I will be making money by now. Right. So how do you know that to keep going for so for so long and to hang on and then to find me get to the point that you are here today.

Samantha: (12:55)
Yeah. A lot of my clients have the same story of I'm not cut out to be an entrepreneur. And I just think anybody who wants to be an entrepreneur is cut out for it. I think it's like in our basic wiring, like some people love being an employee and they really thrive in that. I did not. I quit every job I ever had. I always got angry at how things were run. And if my boss was not like implementing my way, then I was out and I just knew, like, I am not meant to work for somebody else. Like I'm a great employee until you cross me and then I'm terrible and I'm out.

Samantha: (13:40)
So I think that I always just kind of knew that I never felt like I wanted to be an entrepreneur. Like, I, it wasn't like you were, you were just like, I know this is for me. I just knew like a traditional job doesn't seem to work for me ever. And I didn't really understand why until I started building my own business and realizing, Oh, this is a way better fit for me. But I would say like for me, I just always kind of had this idea that I was gonna figure it out. Like I kind of had this like little seed of hope in me that I was gonna figure it out, that I could do it, that I was made for something different than just like regular life. And I have always been somebody who has to figure it out, how to create the thing that I want eventually, even if it took a lot of failures.

Samantha: (14:39)
So I did have a lot of doubt. I did have so much around like, can I really do this? Can I really be somebody who makes a hundred thousand dollars or a million dollars? I had all of the doubts about all of those things. But when I initially started, it was like, I'm pretty sure that I can figure out how to make 50,000 a year. And that alone would make me happy if I could figure out how to do that online, doing something that I loved. So I feel like that was the drive. It was like, I believe I can figure out $50,000 a year. And then once I did that, I was like, well, it's simple math to $100k and I've pretty much done that to every other goal. Like now it's all just math,

Sharon: (15:23)
So, okay. So you had this kind of self-belief I guess in the way that you could always somehow figure it out. And so you, it was, uh, I suppose it sounds like it's kind of like trial and error, tweaking, fine tuning discovery. And then sometimes, obviously also making mistakes and learning that, Oh, that didn't work so well. And then just adjusting. So this is the thing that from $40 to a million, so what was it that changed the thing, the biggest kind of change that helped you go to that kind of a level, because it's like quite a big difference.

Samantha: (15:59)
Yeah. I think it was the major thing, relationships and really understanding how important relationships are in business. I think the biggest difference between my business making even $40,000, $200,000, a million dollars in a year. And when I did the $40 a year was in the $40 a year, I was building a website, building courses, trying to run Facebook ads, creating funnels, like all the things that they tell you to do. And I wasn't building relationships. Like I wasn't getting out there and talking to people, getting to know them, telling them about what I do, being my regular, real self to other people. And once I started doing that, that's when everything changed. And I think that that is the foundation that I built my business on is those relationships that I built with other people, like the year that I had after the $40 a year, it was a $40,000 a year, huge growth from the year before. And every single client I signed that year was because I was out there in Facebook groups, not in person networking and talking to hundreds of people. Like I was on zoom calls all the time. Anytime I could fit it in, I was like in the DM's chatting with people, I was on zoom, talking to people. Very few of them actually hired me that year, but enough to have that kind of growth.

Sharon: (17:35)
Mm. So when you say building the relationships, this is really, I mean, really key in terms of making the difference. And you said you were doing that all the time. How did you get people on the zoom call to want to talk to, but you know, when you're starting out, because I always wonder that, and sometimes we let the self-doubt even stop us. So how did you go about getting people to want to talk to you or listen to you?

Samantha: (18:00)
Yeah. So first of all, I had this approach of like, I can help anybody. And then I joined a bunch of Facebook groups and in those groups, like, I'm sure you have seen, if you're in entrepreneur, Facebook groups, people are asking questions all the time. Like they're always asking questions about what they're struggling with or all kinds of different things. And so I would just go in there and I would answer all the questions. Like I would sort by recent posts and I would just go through and have a really helpful mentality and just help everybody. And with every single one, I would be like, feel free to DM me. If you want to chat more. Like it would be very relaxed. I never approached anyone. Like I would only ever just comment on their posts and then offer the invitation for them to reach out.

Samantha: (18:52)
Most people didn't reach out. Some people did. And then even less of those people who reached out wanting to get on zoom. But I did it enough because I had time, like I was home with kids, but like, we can also be on our computer when our kids are playing. So I was there like on my computer meeting all of the people and being helpful really. And also like a lot of them became friends. Like it wasn't just like, Oh, I'm going to go get clients. It was like, I'm going to meet people. I'm going to make friends. I'm going to be helpful. I'm going to be a contributor in this community.

Sharon: (19:30)
So this is also good because sometimes we're in that helping mode and we really do want to help. How do you get from helping to monetizing, helping? Because you can answer your questions, be very helpful and then give off a lot of your time and energy in yourself and, and, and then have this, how do you get from helping and then transitioned to making your offer known and making a sale and then actually have money come in for what you do to help.

Samantha: (19:58)
I think that a lot of it has to do with energy more than anything else. Like more than what you're saying, like, of course you want to be sure that if you're meeting people online and then they go look at your profile, that it actually says what you do in your profile, right? Like you don't just want to be this wise stranger. Who's giving advice. Like you want your profile to talk about what you do, but you don't necessarily have to explicitly say it to them. I think so much of that comes across in the confidence that you bring to the conversation, even if you're just typing back and forth. And I feel like for me, part of that confidence was saying like, I, help my clients with this all the time, feel free to DM me. If you want more help, like that's such a casual, no pressure offer, but it feels so inviting. And I would just always think I'm going to be the best comment on this thread. I don't have to read any of the other comments, but mine's going to be the best. And I would go in with that kind of confidence and that's how it was received.

Sharon: (21:13)
So then they would then approach you DM you. And then, um, and at some point you would suggest why don't we just zoom call?

Samantha: (21:20)

Sharon: (21:22)
A little bit more and you help. And then you talk about what you, how you can help. And then they would be, would you be interested to work with me if you are then just very relaxed? Is that how you, you saying you do that?

Samantha: (21:32)
Yeah, totally relaxed. So they would come on the call, like you said, like we would be chatting in DM's and I'd be like, this is easier to talk about on a zoom, like, or we can just talk back and forth instead of typing. And that's just true. So they would agree. And then I would just go on and we would just talk and I would help them. And I would have no expectation. It wouldn't be a sales call. And then once we were kind of done working through whatever their issue was, I would say, do you want to hear about what it looks like to work together? And if they didn't no problem at all, and if they did, then I would tell them, Hmm. And like I said, most of them didn't want to work with me. Most of them did not hire me, but some did. Yeah.

Sharon: (22:16)
The some were enough to, for you to kind of say, Hey, you know, this could work. And then you just continue to grow that until you got to where you are today.

Sharon: (22:26)
Yeah. Yeah. And now, like that was in those first couple of years now I have my own audience. Now I run Facebook ads and they're super effective because I built up so much organically with relationships, talking to people that now, like when I write, copy it converts because I know my people so well.

Sharon: (22:50)
Which point that you decide that you would start using Facebook Ads to help you grow the business.

Sharon: (22:56)
So let's see, I started with Facebook ads around six or seven months ago, really seriously. I hired a team and everything and something that I tell my clients with ads is like, you're ready for ads when you're okay. Losing money. And so I got to that point where I was like, okay, I'm okay. Investing some money in this and not getting a return. But before that organic was my primary way of getting clients.

Sharon: (23:26)
But then, Okay, so this is, I'm curious. Now I'm getting, I just want to clarify, because you said that Facebook ads were really effective. However, you, you knew that it was time to do Facebook ads when you're ready to lose money. So how does that work? Because it's effective, but you're losing on it.

Samantha: (23:42)
Yeah. Okay. So there's a trial and error period for most of us when we start with Facebook ads and you just want to go into it with that mentality of knowing, we have to invest some money to learn what works, what doesn't work to teach Facebook, who is our best client to figure out how to sell to cold traffic. Like there is just a learning curve involved with Facebook ads. And I would say most of us lose money initially at the beginning because we are learning those lessons. It's not necessarily always an instant ROI for some people. It is. And that's amazing, but for a lot of us, it isn't, and it's just good to be aware of that.

Sharon: (24:29)
Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah. Cause I have done Facebook ads before and it didn't work for a bit and I thought, Hmm, this doesn't seem to be working. So it's good to hear from you that it's, it's common, it's normal. It's just part and parcel of the learning phase. So you might have to start exploring that again. You talked a little bit early on about time and I'm because as I was listening to you talk about the aiming and going into Facebook groups and I can imagine that does take a bit of time for sure. What advice would you give? Because I guess you work with the working moms, you know, who are all taking care of kids or maybe working some, maybe stay home moms. What's your, what's your advice in terms of time management and making sure that you can still focus in grow the business, but not, I mean, still be present right. For the kids and the family.

Samantha: (25:20)
Yeah. I think it's a personal thing for every person that you need to really find. What is most essential for you? What is your expectation of yourself in all of the different areas of your life? And then from there, what's the time that you have and fit those things in for me, like I said, I, I had a young child at home when I was first building my business, but it was really easy for me to be in the same room as her, when she was playing or coloring, be present with her, but also be able to have the computer there, be answering questions if she needed a snack or help getting a drink or anything like that. It was really easy for me to set that aside and go do mum duty for a little while. I think a lot of us have this idea that it has to look a certain way. Like if you are serious about your business, then you have to be like dressed up in an office, focused for an eight hour day. And it's not true. It can be so much more casual. You can be wearing sweat pants on the couch while your child is playing and be checking in and have that not be a problem. I think though it is a very personal thing for me. It worked really well. And I was able to feel like I was checking off those essentials in both places.

Sharon: (26:52)
Hmm. Yeah. So yeah, I think, yeah, that's really good to hear about being okay with the t-shirt being okay with toys and everything everywhere. Yeah. Because this is something I think with COVID now, a lot of us have now started to get a taste of everything being integrated. It's like, I mean, it can be good for some and I mean, it might be working out better for some than others because it really also depends on the home environment that we're in. But this learning that actually is all integrated. It doesn't have to be like a line, a clear divide between when you're taking care of your kids and when you're actually doing the work. Yeah. So that we just have to find our own different ways to find the time for what's really important. So now that you're, you talked about how you now have your own audience, would you like to share with those of us because I've checked out your website and you've got a course that's called Mama to CEO, which is really cool.

Sharon: (27:49)
I really liked that title. Could you tell us a little bit more about it? Because there are some people that thought I started also coaching some of the working moms and some were trying to figure out exactly like what you said, can't really go into nine to five. Sometimes it's purely because of childcare or lack of childcare and they want to do something at home. You know, what would be a good place to start? Maybe. I don't know if you want to talk about bringing the, a little bit about what you teach in your course.

Samantha: (28:15)
Yeah. So in my course, I teach how to take the business that you have and really make money with it. My primary focus is helping somebody get to $5,000 a month. But what I teach in there is really everything that I've done all the way from the $40 a year to the million dollar a year. So I have some clients in there as well, who are at a hundred K even. And so much of it is beneficial. We talk about time management, like we've talked about here. I talk about selling in a really authentic way. That's super effective. I think a great time management technique for most people is getting better at selling because then you don't have to do so many sales conversations to make the money that you want to make. And then the other piece is marketing. I love marketing. I love copy.

Samantha: (29:10)
So I do a lot of teaching on that, in that program as well. I think for somebody who's just starting out and doesn't know even what kind of business they want to do for a lot of people, virtual assisting is a great place to start. I have an episode of my podcast where I interview one of my clients who got to a hundred K in a year as a virtual assistant. And we talk all about like, exactly how to get started, how to know what to offer, how to find clients as a VA, all of it, that episode is incredible. So I highly recommend that for somebody who, like you said, wants to have an online business, but maybe doesn't know what exactly to do.

Sharon: (30:00)
Yeah. And I think we'll put that in the show notes. Exactly. Which episode to go listen to, because I think that could be really, really useful for someone who really has totally no clue how to start. Right. And sometimes it was. So do you find that we don't even know like some of the skills we have that someone would actually pay us for it?

Samantha: (30:20)
Yeah. I find that most people don't know the skills that they have that people want to pay for, because most of the things that we're really good at, we just think everybody's really good at that. So I would take a look at like, what are those things that you are really good at? Even if you think everybody else already knows it, put it on a list and other people don't know it.

Sharon: (30:45)
Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And then start offering it as a, something that you can help someone else with. Yeah. Okay. So I just want to, I'm just paying attention to time and I know you're a busy mom, busy working mom, yourself, CEO, yourself, yourselves. I want to be respectful of the time, but can I just ask you, so now if you look back in retrospect, what do you think was the lesson something that you learned that you now know that you wish you knew back then when you were starting out?

Samantha: (31:12)
Yeah, I think it really goes back to that relationship piece. And here's why I think during that first year I looked at what, all of the like multiple six figure seven figure entrepreneurs out in the world were doing. And I just copied all of that. Like courses, email lists, freebie funnel, website, all the things I just started doing all of that and thought this was the way to do it. And because I had no audience at that time, it didn't work. So I think in that first year, if I would've known people have to know you exist or one, like you have to meet lots of people and let them know that you exist. I think that that would have changed so much for me in that first year. And I would have made so much more money, so much more, so much faster and with a lot less stress and heartache than I did when I felt like I was putting in so much work and getting nothing out of it.

Sharon: (32:21)
So rather than spend all that time and energy, creating the funnels, doing the lead magnets and all of that spend the time to just talk to people, get to know them, see how you can help them. And then you just truly help them. And, and sometimes yeah, sometimes you don't see the returns immediately and sometimes it was just not the right time for a variety of reasons for them, but then make that relationship and just make that friendships.

Sharon: (32:47)
Yes. And then those people become the foundation of your audience. That's how you can grow an email list or a Facebook group or Instagram following or whatever it is.

Sharon: (32:59)
Yeah. That's great. Yeah. And yeah, sometimes we just get distracted with all of the tactics and stuff that we need to do. And we think that we're doing all the things and we're really busy and we're not getting the results. And then we say, it's not going to work and we're not try out for this. Oh my gosh. It sounds like, like a flashback of my story. So thank you for enlightening me and to kind of probably shift focus. So thank you so much for that. Samantha has, as we're wrapping up this interview, is there anything similar that you think that you want to make sure that, you know, you share with our listeners before we wrap up, I do have a final question, which is on financial freedom, but I just want to make sure that we didn't miss out anything that you wanted to share.

Samantha: (33:40)
Yeah. I think the most important thing that I want everybody to know is that however they are, whoever they are right now is enough to help somebody right now. And I think that goes along the lines of how we were talking about meeting people, building relationships, help them, like you have enough to help somebody right now.

Sharon: (34:03)
Hmm. It's actually really powerful for someone to know and that you can actually, where you are right now is exactly where you can start, right. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. That's great. So final question. Since we are in the financially free woman podcast, what is your idea of financial freedom and what advice would you have for someone who is looking to achieve that financial freedom for themselves?

Samantha: (34:30)
Yeah. So I think for me, the way that I look at financial freedom, it's really about having choices and not having to say yes or no ever because of money, like money giving you the power to say yes or no to anything you want ever in your life. That is my idea of financial freedom.

Sharon: (34:56)
Yeah. It's all about the choice. And then you having the choice and what advice would you give to someone who is trying to reach financial freedom then?

Samantha: (35:04)
Yeah, I think it's totally possible. And I think for anybody, like you just have to put in that work and it doesn't have to be like 24 seven hustle around the clock, but it needs to be some real work. Like there was a couple of years where I was fully booked with one-on-one clients and working the schedule. That was not my ideal schedule. Like I didn't want to work nine to five, four to five days a week, but I was doing that in my business, and it allowed me to build an audience, build demand, make a lot of money, which was great. And now I'm in a position where I only have to work three days a week if I want, I make over a million dollars a year now as my norm. And that happened because of the work that I was willing to put in at the beginning.

Sharon: (36:02)
Hmm. Yeah. That's, that's really good advice. Good advice for those of us who are, who are kind of caught right now in that situation where we might be working the long hours and just one and maybe not seeing the results yet, it's kind of all the investments we're putting in ourselves, in our business and for the future. So that's really great way. I think it's a nice way to round out the interview. So thank you so much, Samantha, for joining us today.
