As the sole provider with 2 young kids and unrelenting bills to pay every month, I scrambled to figure out how to bring cashflow in quickly.
It was a very tough period of my life. But it forced me to stop seeing my career (and LinkedIn profile) as something that belonged to my employer.
Your job only pays you for one thing - the job you were hired to do. It doesn't matter how experienced you are, how qualified you are. There's always a ceiling. That's just how jobs work.
So I started treating my career like my own business. Because it is.
You have skills. You have experience. That's a career asset you’ve invested years into. And an asset can generate more than one stream of income. It doesn't have to stop at one salary.
I'm still working in HR. Still involved in discussion about pay, promotions, who stays, who goes. But just because I play by the rules in a job doesn’t mean I don’t have opinions about work and career that don’t conform to the status quo.
I like my job. I'm not telling you to quit yours. But what I’m saying is that most people are sitting on a sellable skill hiding inside their job title, and they've never once thought to extract more income out of it.
